Description: Gadolinium, identified by the element symbol Gd and atomic number 64, has an atomic weight of 157.25. This silvery-white metal is both malleable and magnetic at room temperature, boasting a melting point of 1313°C and a boiling point of 3273°C, with a density of 7.901g/m³. Gadolinium remains stable in dry air but tarnishes in humid conditions. Notably, it has the highest thermal neutron capture cross-section among elements. Representing 0.000636% of the Earth's crust, gadolinium is predominantly found in monazite and bastnasite. Through magnetized refrigeration using gadolinium salts, ultra-low temperatures nearing absolute zero can be achieved.
Applications:Gadolinium's versatility spans across medical, industrial, nuclear energy, and various other sectors. It is extensively utilized as a neutron absorber in atomic reactors and finds applications in microwave technology and color television phosphors.
