Tantalum, with the chemical symbol Ta, is a lustrous steel-gray metal. It belongs to the VB family in the periodic table, has an atomic number of 73, and an atomic weight of 180.9479. Boasting a body-centered cubic crystal structure, this metal commonly exhibits a valence of +5. Tantalum's hardness is inherently low and varies with oxygen content; ordinary pure tantalum, when annealed, has a Vickers hardness of merely 140 HV. Its melting point soars to a remarkable 2995°C, placing it fifth among elements, just after carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. Highly malleable, tantalum can be drawn into thin wires. It features a minimal coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding by just 6.6 ppm per degree Celsius. Moreover, its exceptional toughness surpasses even that of copper.

Primarily sourced from tantalite, tantalum coexists with niobium. Defined by moderate hardness and excellent ductility, it can be shaped into thin foils and fine wires. Tantalum's small coefficient of thermal expansion and superior chemical properties, including high resistance to corrosion, make it invaluable. It finds applications in making evaporators, electrodes for electron tubes, rectifiers, and electrolytic capacitors. In the medical field, it's utilized for suturing tissues, thanks to its corrosion resistance, which stems from a stable tantalum pentoxide (TaO) protective film on its surface.
