Description:

Molybdenum, with the element symbol Mo and atomic number 42, is a distinguished member of the VIB group metals. Known by its metallic, silver-white hue, molybdenum boasts a remarkable density of 10.2 g/cm³. This hard and tough metal features a high melting point and excellent thermal conductivity. Notably, molybdenum remains unreactive with air at room temperature. As a versatile transition element, it effortlessly changes its oxidation state, leading to varied colors of molybdenum ions based on their oxidation levels.

The molybdenum (Mo) sputtering target retains the exceptional properties of its base metal. In its pure form, molybdenum exhibits a silvery-grey sheen, a Mohs hardness of 5.5, and a standard atomic weight of 95.95 g/mol. Its melting point is an impressive 2,623 °C (4,753 °F), making it one of the highest among natural elements, surpassed only by elements like tantalum, osmium, rhenium, tungsten, and carbon. Additionally, it has one of the lowest thermal expansion coefficients, setting it apart in the family of commercially utilized metals.

Application:

Molybdenum boasts exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity, a low thermal expansion coefficient, and robust corrosion resistance. These properties make it indispensable in electric vacuum devices, high-temperature furnace heating elements, insulation boards, and evaporation boats. Furthermore, molybdenum sputtering targets are extensively utilized in TFT-LCDs, thin-film solar cells, and semiconductor industries, ensuring superior performance and reliability.

Welding Method for Molybdenum Sputtering Target
To weld a molybdenum or molybdenum alloy sputtering target, follow these steps: Provide the target material, backplate, and solder. Nickel-plate the bonding surface of the target material. Preheat the target material to evenly distribute the solder on its bonding surface. Similarly, preheat the backplate to ensure the solder is evenly spread on its bonding surface. Adhere and merge the bonding surfaces of the target and backplate, then perform welding to form the target component. Finally, cool the target component. This welding method ensures a high-strength bond between the molybdenum or molybdenum alloy target and the backplate—especially a copper backplate—meeting the rigorous demands of the sputtering process. Even for larger target areas, this method effectively prevents deformation, warpage, and other issues.
