This lustrous, silver-gray transition metal boasts a melting point of 2227ºC and a boiling point of 4602ºC. It is known for its insolubility in water and has a density of 13.31 g/cm³. Hafnium is malleable, but it transitions to a hard and brittle state in the presence of impurities. This element remains stable in atmospheric conditions, tarnishing only superficially upon combustion. A match flame is sufficient to ignite a thin hafnium filament. Its chemical properties closely mirror those of zirconium, exhibiting resistance to water, dilute acids, and strong alkalis, though it readily dissolves in aqua regia.
