Terbium, element symbol Tb, atomic number 65, is located in Group IIIB of the sixth period. The element is a silver-white metal and is a rare earth metal. It is soft and ductile, and is easily corroded by air at high temperatures; it corrodes very slowly at room temperature. Soluble in acid, salts are colorless. The oxide Tb4O7 is brown. Density: 8.27g/cm3 (25ºC), elemental melting point: 1356ºC. Elemental boiling point: 3230ºC. It has high reactivity. Should be stored in a container filled with inert gas or a vacuum container.

Magneto-optical optical discs developed with Tb-Fe amorphous thin films are used as computer storage elements, and the storage capacity is increased by 10 to 15 times. Magneto-optical glass: Terbium-containing Faraday optical glass is a key material in the manufacture of rotators, isolators and circulators widely used in laser technology. The heavy rare earth element-transition metal element series alloys represented by terbium-iron-cobalt alloy can be used as optical disks for computer recording media.
