Description: Samarium (Sm), with an atomic number of 62, is a medium-hard, silver-white metal that readily oxidizes when exposed to air.
Samarium boasts a melting point of 1345K (1072°C) and a boiling point of 2064K (1791°C). As a prominent member of the lanthanide series, it predominantly exhibits an oxidation state of +3. Common samarium(II) compounds include SmO, SmS, SmSe, and SmTe. It is essential to avoid contact with acids, oxides, and moisture. While it is acid-soluble, it remains insoluble in water and easily bonds with non-metallic elements. Naturally occurring as trivalent samarium salts, it finds applications as a neutron absorber and in the production of optoelectronic equipment and alloys.
Application:Samarium is integral to the manufacture of laser materials, microwave and infrared devices, and plays a crucial role in the atomic energy sector.
