Tantalum, symbolized as Ta, is a steel-gray metal belonging to the VB family in the periodic table. With an atomic number of 73 and atomic weight of 180.9479, it features a body-centered cubic crystal structure and commonly exhibits a valence of +5. While tantalum's hardness varies with its oxygen content, ordinary pure tantalum has an annealed Vickers hardness of merely 140 HV. Its melting point is exceptionally high at 2995°C, making it the fifth-highest among pure substances, following carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. Tantalum is highly malleable, capable of being stretched into thin wires, and has a minimal coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding only by 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Moreover, its toughness surpasses even that of copper.
Primarily found in tantalite and often coexisting with niobium, tantalum boasts moderate hardness and excellent ductility, allowing it to be drawn into thin foils or fine wires. With its small coefficient of thermal expansion, tantalum is notable for its high chemical stability and resistance to corrosion, forming a stable tantalum pentoxide (TA205) protective film on its surface. Its applications range from manufacturing evaporators to serving as electrodes in electron tubes, rectifiers, and electrolytic capacitors. Medically, tantalum is used to fabricate sheets or threads for repairing damaged tissues.
