Iridium, a metallic element with the symbol Ir and atomic number 77, boasts an impressive atomic weight of 192.22. This shiny, silvery-white metal has a melting point of 2450 °C and a boiling point of 4130 °C. It is insoluble in water and has a remarkable density of 22.56 g/cm³. Iridium is essential for various high-temperature applications; it is used in pure iridium crucibles for growing high melting point oxide single crystals and in scientific instruments, thermocouples, and resistance wires made from pure iridium, platinum-iridium alloys, and iridium-rhodium alloys. Adding iridium to platinum enhances its corrosion resistance in water, acid, and halogen environments, and increases its mechanical strength up to 500 °C.
Initially utilized for pen points, iridium soon found applications in injection needles, balance blades, compass brackets, and electrical contacts. Iridium crucibles, crucial for growing refractory oxide crystals, can operate for thousands of hours at temperatures between 2100 and 2200 °C, making them invaluable as a precious metal material. Iridium/iridium-rhodium thermocouples are the sole noble metal temperature measuring materials capable of withstanding high temperatures up to 2100 °C in the atmosphere, owing to their remarkable oxidation resistance and thermoelectric properties. Anodic iridium oxide film is emerging as a promising electrochromic material. Additionally, Ir-192 serves as a γ-ray source for nondestructive testing and radiochemotherapy.
