Ytterbium exhibits two distinct crystal structures: the α-type, a face-centered cubic system functional at room temperature up to 798°C; and the β-type, a body-centered cubic lattice that prevails above 798°C. This remarkable metal is insoluble in cold water but soluble in acid and liquid ammonia.
