Description:
Preparation method: In industry, solvent extraction and ion exchange methods are commonly used to separate and purify ytterbium oxide from monazite, and ytterbium oxide is reduced with metallic lanthanum, and then vacuum distilled to obtain high-purity metallic ytterbium. High-purity ytterbium ingots are made of high-purity ytterbium through vacuum melting and casting.

Element symbol Yb. Atomic weight 173.04 (3). Atomic number 70. Lanthanide element. Silvery white metal. Ductile and soft. There are two crystal structures: α-type is face-centered cubic system (room temperature -798ºC); β-type is body-centered cubic (above 798ºC) lattice. Insoluble in cold water, soluble in acid and liquid ammonia. Quite stable in air. Its oxidation states are +2 and +3.
