Gadolinium is a silvery-white metal that is slightly malleable. Gadolinium is regarded as the dividing point between light and heavy rare earth elements in most literature, and the stability of the lanthanide series starting from gadolinium in air is significantly higher than that of the lighter lanthanum to europium. Gadolinium reacts slowly with oxygen or water vapor in the air, gradually forming a black oxide layer on the surface. Gadolinium compounds are highly paramagnetic and can be used as contrast agents for MRI, called Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA). Gadolinium reacts strongly to the magnetic field of the magnetic resonance imaging machine. When injected into the blood vessels in the form of gadopentetate dimeglumine, the magnetic resonance imaging will clearly show the blood flow direction.
