Terbium, with the element symbol Tb and atomic number 65, belongs to Group IIIB of the sixth period. This silver-white, rare earth metal is both soft and ductile. It is highly reactive, corroding easily in air at high temperatures but much slower at room temperature. Terbium is soluble in acids, forming colorless salts. The oxide, Tb4O7, is brown. With a density of 8.27g/cm3 at 25ºC, its elemental melting point reaches 1356ºC, while its boiling point extends to 3230ºC. Due to its high reactivity, Terbium should be stored in containers with inert gas or vacuum-sealed to maintain its integrity.
Terbium compounds have versatile applications such as insecticides and treatments for skin diseases. In magneto-optical storage, Terbium-based materials are produced on a mass scale. Terbium-Fe amorphous thin films used in magneto-optical optical discs significantly enhance computer storage capacity by 10 to 15 times. Terbium-containing Faraday optical glass is pivotal in manufacturing rotators, isolators, and circulators for laser technology. Terbium-iron-cobalt alloys, representing heavy rare earth element-transition metal series alloys, are utilized in optical disks, advancing computer recording media.
