Tantalum, with the chemical symbol Ta, is a steel-gray metal from the VB family in the periodic table. Boasting an atomic number of 73 and an atomic weight of 180.9479, this body-centered cubic crystal has a common valence of +5. Tantalum's hardness, which varies with oxygen content, is relatively low. For instance, ordinary pure tantalum, when annealed, has a Vickers hardness of only 140 HV. With a melting point of a staggering 2995°C, tantalum ranks as the fifth-highest among elemental substances, just behind carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. Exceptionally malleable, tantalum can be drawn into thin wires and exhibits a very small coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding by only 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Furthermore, tantalum's toughness surpasses that of copper, making it an extraordinarily versatile material.

Predominantly found in tantalite and often occurring alongside niobium, tantalum is known for its moderate hardness and excellent ductility, which enable it to be drawn into thin foil or fine wire.
