For flexible thin-film solar cells (CIGS), a WTi barrier layer is pivotal in preventing iron atoms from diffusing from the steel substrate through the molybdenum back contact into the CIGS semiconductor. Even minute quantities of iron, measured in µg/g, can drastically reduce the efficiency of CIGS solar cells.
