To mitigate this challenge, an adhesive layer is placed between the gold thin film and silicon wafers. Although pure nickel is commonly used for this purpose, diffusion between the nickel layer and the gold conductive layer occurs. Hence, a barrier layer is crucial to prevent such diffusion.
