Tantalum, symbolized by Ta, is a steel-gray metal belonging to the VB family in the periodic table. With an atomic number of 73 and an atomic weight of 180.9479, it crystallizes in a body-centered cubic structure and typically exhibits a +5 valence state. Despite its relatively low hardness, which varies with oxygen content, pure tantalum's annealed Vickers hardness is merely 140 HV. Notably, tantalum boasts a melting point of 2995°C, making it one of the highest melting points of any element, surpassed only by carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. This metal is highly malleable, capable of being drawn into thin wires, and expands very little with temperature changes, at a rate of just 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Additionally, tantalum's toughness surpasses even that of copper, enhancing its versatility in various applications.

Tantalum is primarily sourced from tantalite ores, where it often coexists with niobium. This metal is characterized by moderate hardness, excellent ductility, and can be processed into thin foils and fine wires. With a minimal coefficient of thermal expansion, tantalum possesses exceptional chemical properties and is highly resistant to corrosion. These traits enable its use in manufacturing evaporators and as electrodes in electron tubes, rectifiers, and electrolytic capacitors. In the medical field, tantalum is utilized for making sheets and threads to repair damaged tissues. Its corrosion resistance is largely attributed to the formation of a stable tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) film on its surface.
