Applications:

Nickel, renowned for its remarkable plasticity, corrosion resistance, and magnetic properties, is predominantly utilized in the realms of steel production, nickel-based alloys, electroplating, and battery manufacturing. Its versatility extends to various military manufacturing sectors such as aircraft and radar systems, as well as civil machinery manufacturing and the electroplating industry.

In the complex world of integrated circuit fabrication, pure gold is typically employed as the interconnect metal, meticulously deposited onto silicon wafers. However, gold's tendency to diffuse into the silicon wafer forms a high-resistance AuSi compound, significantly reducing the current density within the wiring and potentially compromising the entire wiring system.
To address this issue, it is recommended to introduce an adhesive layer between the gold thin film and silicon wafers. This adhesive layer is typically composed of pure nickel. However, diffusion also takes place between the nickel layer and the gold conductive layer, necessitating the implementation of a barrier layer to prevent undesirable diffusion between the gold conductive layer and the nickel adhesive layer.
Vanadium, with its high melting point and substantial current density, is the material of choice for depositing the barrier layer. Consequently, nickel sputtering targets, vanadium sputtering targets, and gold sputtering targets are all integral components in the fabrication of integrated circuits.
Nickel vanadium (NiV) sputtering targets, containing 7% vanadium, harness the combined strengths of both nickel and vanadium. This unique alloy allows for the simultaneous creation of both adhesive and barrier layers. Additionally, NiV alloy is non-magnetic, making it highly suitable for magnetron sputtering processes.
