Tantalum, with the chemical symbol Ta, is a steel-gray metal of the VB family in the periodic table, boasting an atomic number of 73 and an atomic weight of 180.9479. Its body-centered cubic crystal structure typically exhibits a valence of +5. Pure tantalum, which is annealed, has a Vickers hardness of just 140 hv, reflecting its low hardness and oxygen content dependency. Ranking fifth in melting point among elemental substances at an impressive 2995°C, tantalum is only surpassed by carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. Notably malleable, tantalum can be drawn into extremely thin wires and exhibits a minor coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding merely 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. With superior toughness, even outpacing copper, tantalum is a material of exceptional resilience.

Primarily found in tantalite and often coexisting with niobium, tantalum is moderately hard yet highly ductile, allowing it to be drawn into fine wire or thin foil. Its minimal coefficient of thermal expansion and excellent chemical properties make it remarkably resistant to corrosion. This corrosion resistance stems from the formation of a stable tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) protective layer on its surface. Tantalum’s unique properties enable its use in creating evaporators, as electrodes in electron tubes, rectifiers, and electrolytic capacitors. In the medical field, it is used to create sheets or threads for suturing damaged tissues.
