Description:
Samarium, chemical symbol is Sm, atomic number is 62. Samarium is a medium-hard, silver-white metal that oxidizes easily in air.
The melting point is 1345K (1072°C) and the boiling point is 2064K (1791°C). As a typical lanthanide element, the oxidation state of samarium is usually +3. Compounds of samarium(II), the most common are SmO, SmS, SmSe and SmTe. Avoid contact with acids, oxides, and moisture. Soluble in acid, insoluble in water. Easy to combine with non-metallic elements. Exists in nature in the form of trivalent samarium salts. It can be used as neutron absorber, optoelectronic equipment and alloy manufacturing.
Application:
Samarium is used to manufacture laser materials, microwave and infrared equipment, and also has important uses in the atomic energy industry.
Used in electronics and ceramic industries. Samarium is easily magnetized but difficult to demagnetize, which means it will have important applications in solid-state components and superconducting technology in the future.
