This body-centered cubic crystal exhibits a common valence of +5. Tantalum's hardness is relatively low and varies with oxygen content. For instance, ordinary pure tantalum, when annealed, has a Vickers hardness of only 140 HV. Its melting point is a staggering 2995°C, ranking it as the fifth-highest among elemental substances, just behind carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. Tantalum is exceptionally malleable, allowing it to be drawn into thin wires. It also has a very small coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding by only 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Furthermore, tantalum's toughness surpasses that of copper, making it a highly versatile material.
Tantalum is predominantly found in tantalite and often occurs alongside niobium.
