Tantalum, with the chemical symbol Ta, is a steel-gray metal belonging to the VB family in the periodic table. It boasts an atomic number of 73 and an atomic weight of 180.9479. Exhibiting a body-centered cubic crystal structure, tantalum typically holds a valence of +5. Known for its low hardness and oxygen content-dependent characteristics, ordinary pure tantalum that has been annealed has a Vickers hardness of merely 140 HV. With a melting point reaching an impressive 2995°C, tantalum ranks fifth among the elements, coming after carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. It is exceptionally malleable, capable of being drawn into thin wires, and has a remarkably low coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding only by 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Despite its toughness, tantalum surpasses copper in durability.

Tantalum is primarily found in tantalite and frequently coexists with niobium. It has moderate hardness and exceptional ductility, allowing it to be drawn into thin foils and fine wires. Featuring a low coefficient of thermal expansion, tantalum is highly resistant to corrosion due to its ability to form a stable tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) protective film. This remarkable chemical property makes it an ideal material for manufacturing evaporators, electrodes for electron tubes, rectifiers, and electrolytic capacitors. In the medical field, tantalum is used to create sheets or threads for suturing damaged tissues.
