Chromium, represented by its chemical symbol 'Cr', stands out as a fascinating metal in the VIB group of the periodic table. With an atomic number of 24 and an atomic weight of 51.996, this element features a density of 7.19g/cm³, a melting point of 1857±20ºC, and an impressive boiling point of 2672ºC. Chromium's structure is characterized by body-centered cubic crystals and it typically exhibits valences of +3, +6, and +2, accompanied by an ionization energy of 6.766 electron volts. This striking silver-white metal is renowned for its exceptional hardness, brittleness, and unparalleled resistance to corrosion. Its inert nature ensures chromium's stability against oxygen and moisture at ambient conditions. Despite its remarkable attributes, chromium is quite rare, making up only 0.01% of the Earth's crust and ranking 17th in abundance. It naturally occurs in the form of chromite ore and is not found in its free elemental state.
Chromium, as the most widely used material for coatings, can provide wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant coatings for tools, molds, parts, decorations, sanitary ware and other fields.
