This versatile aluminum target material can be used to coat reflective films, conductive films, semiconductor films, capacitor films, decorative films, protective films, integrated circuits, and displays. Hence, aluminum target material is the top choice when the functionality of the film is paramount.
Aluminum is obtained by extracting Al2O3 from bauxite and electrolyzing it in molten cryolite, achieving a typical purity of 99%. However, aluminum of this purity is unsuitable for the production of aluminum targets, which require exceptionally high purity. High-purity aluminum, produced through techniques such as segregation, three-layer electrolysis, or combined zone smelting, is essential and more costly than industrial pure aluminum (99.7%). In China, the highest purity available reaches approximately 99.9999% (6N). Using high-purity aluminum ingots, forging, rolling, and heat treatment processes refine the grains and increase density to meet sputtering requirements. Post-deformation, the high-purity aluminum undergoes precise mechanical processing to achieve the exact target size and high surface quality necessary for vacuum coating machines.
