Molybdenum disulfide: A black solid powder distinguished by its metallic luster. Boasting the chemical formula MoS2, it features a melting point of 1185ºC and a density of 4.80g/cm3 at 14ºC. With a Mohs hardness ranging from 1.0 to 1.5, this compound begins to decompose at 1370ºC, ultimately breaking down into metallic molybdenum and sulfur at 1600ºC. It's noteworthy that upon heating in air at 315°C, MoS2 starts to oxidize, with the oxidation reaction intensifying as the temperature increases.
Application:
Molybdenum disulfide is an essential solid lubricant, exceptionally designed for high-temperature and high-pressure environments.
In addition to its lubrication capabilities, it is diamagnetic and can function as a linear photoconductor and semiconductor. It exhibits both P-type and N-type conductivity, facilitating rectification and energy conversion processes.
