Tantalum, with the chemical symbol Ta, is a steel-gray metal belonging to the VB family in the periodic table. It boasts an atomic number of 73 and an atomic weight of 180.9479. Characterized by a body-centered cubic crystal structure, it typically exhibits a valence of +5. Despite being low in hardness and highly dependent on oxygen content, ordinary pure tantalum, when annealed, has a Vickers hardness of only 140 HV. Its melting point, an impressive 2995°C, ranks fifth among elemental substances, just behind carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. Tantalum’s remarkable malleability allows it to be drawn into thin wires. It has a minimal coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding only by 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Additionally, its toughness surpasses that of copper, making it a highly versatile material.
Primarily found in tantalite, tantalum often coexists with niobium. With moderate hardness and excellent ductility, it can be drawn into thin foils or fine wires. Exhibiting a minimal coefficient of thermal expansion, tantalum also showcases substantial chemical resistance and high corrosion resistance. These attributes make it ideal for manufacturing evaporators, electrodes for electron tubes, rectifiers, and electrolytic capacitors. In the medical field, it is used to create sheets and threads for repairing damaged tissue. Its corrosion resistance is attributed to a stable tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) film that forms on its surface, providing robust protection.
Tantalum's unique properties lend it to a broad spectrum of applications across various industries.
In the production of various inorganic acids, tantalum serves as a valuable substitute for stainless steel.
Moreover, in the chemical, electronic, and electrical industries,
tantalum can replace precious metals like platinum in many critical applications,
including the manufacturing of capacitors for military equipment.
Remarkably, half of the world’s tantalum production is dedicated to the production of tantalum capacitors.
