Description:
Hafnium, symbol Hf, is a remarkable element boasting an atomic number of 72 and an atomic weight of 178.49. This shiny, silver-gray transition metal exhibits a high melting point of 2227ºC and an astounding boiling point of 4602ºC. With a density of 13.31 g/cm³, hafnium is insoluble in water and showcases plasticity, becoming hard and brittle in the presence of impurities. Stable in air, hafnium only tarnishes slightly upon burning. Its filament can be ignited using a mere match flame. With properties akin to zirconium, hafnium remains inert in water, dilute acid, and strong alkali but dissolves readily in aqua regia.
