It effectively separates semiconductor layers from metallization layers, such as aluminum from silicon or copper from silicon, to prevent the formation of intermetallic phases that could compromise semiconductor functionality. In cutting-edge flexible thin-film solar cells (CIGS), a WTi barrier layer is crucial in preventing iron atoms from diffusing from the steel substrate through the molybdenum back contact into the CIGS semiconductor. Even trace amounts of iron can drastically reduce CIGS solar cell efficiency.
