To mitigate this challenge, an adhesive layer is placed between the gold thin film and silicon wafers. Pure nickel is commonly used for this purpose, but diffusion between the nickel layer and the gold conductive layer still occurs. Thus, a barrier layer is indispensable to prevent such diffusion.
