Description: Samarium, denoted by the chemical symbol Sm and atomic number 62, is a medium-hard, silver-white metal which oxidizes readily when exposed to air.
Samarium boasts an impressive melting point of 1345K (1072°C) and a boiling point of 2064K (1791°C). This characteristic lanthanide typically exhibits an oxidation state of +3 and forms key compounds such as SmO, SmS, SmSe, and SmTe. Due to its reactivity, it should be kept away from acids, oxides, and moisture. While soluble in acid, it remains insoluble in water and readily bonds with non-metallic elements. In nature, samarium is most commonly found in trivalent samarium salts. Its versatility extends across various applications, serving as a neutron absorber, in optoelectronic devices, and alloy manufacturing.
Application:Samarium is integral to the production of laser materials and is essential in microwave and infrared equipment, as well as playing a pivotal role in the atomic energy sector.
