Description:
Hafnium (Hf), with an atomic number of 72 and an atomic weight of 178.49, is a lustrous silver-gray transition metal known for its remarkable properties. It boasts a high melting point of 2227 ºC and an even higher boiling point of 4602 ºC. This element, with a density of 13.31 g/cm³, remains insoluble in water. While hafnium is inherently plastic, it becomes hard and brittle when impurities are present. In its pure form, it is stable in air, only forming a darkened surface layer when burned, and can be ignited with a match flame. Exhibiting properties akin to zirconium, hafnium is unreactive with water, dilute acids, and strong alkaline solutions but dissolves readily in aqua regia.
