Tantalum, with the chemical symbol Ta, is a steel-gray metal belonging to the VB family in the periodic table. It boasts an atomic number of 73 and an atomic weight of 180.9479. Featuring a body-centered cubic crystal structure, tantalum commonly exhibits a valence of +5. Despite possessing low hardness and being oxygen content-dependent, ordinary pure tantalum, when annealed, has a Vickers hardness of merely 140 hv. Its exceptionally high melting point of 2995°C ranks fifth among elemental substances, trailing only carbon, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. Tantalum demonstrates remarkable malleability, enabling it to be drawn into thin wires. It has a minimal coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding only 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Additionally, tantalum is renowned for its robust toughness, surpassing even copper.
Predominantly found in tantalite and often coexisting with niobium, tantalum showcases moderate hardness and exceptional ductility. It can be fabricated into thin foils and fine wires, exhibiting a minimal coefficient of thermal expansion. Notably, tantalum's high chemical stability and outstanding corrosion resistance make it a prime material for manufacturing evaporators, electrodes for electron tubes, rectifiers, and electrolytic capacitors. In the medical field, tantalum is used to produce sheets and threads for repairing damaged tissue. The metal’s remarkable corrosion resistance is attributed to the formation of a stable tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) protective film on its surface.
Tantalum finds extensive applications across various industries due to its distinct properties.
In the production of various inorganic acids, tantalum serves as an excellent substitute for stainless steel.
Furthermore, tantalum plays a pivotal role in the chemical, electronic, electrical, and multiple other industries,
where it can take over roles traditionally reserved for the precious metal platinum.
Tantalum is also utilized in the manufacturing of capacitors designed for military equipment.
Indeed, half of the global tantalum production is dedicated to producing tantalum capacitors.
