The main components of ferronickel are nickel and iron, complemented by trace elements such as Cr, Si, S, P, and C. Nickel is completely soluble in γ-iron, with a 10% solubility in α-iron. According to ISO standards, ferronickel is categorized into FeNi20 (Ni 15%~25%), FeNi30 (Ni 25%~35%), FeNi40 (Ni 35%~45%), and FeNi50 (Ni 45%~60%). It is further sub-divided into high carbon (C 1.0%~2.5%), medium carbon (C 0.030%~1.0%), and low carbon (C <0.03%), along with low phosphorus (P <0.02%) and high phosphorus (P <0.030%) grades.

Nickel-iron (NiFe) boasts a melting point range of 1430-1480 degrees Celsius and a density between 8.1-8.7g/cm³. This alloy is distinguished by its low-frequency soft magnetic properties, featuring low coercivity and high magnetic permeability in weak magnetic fields. Initially utilized in telephone communications, advancements in heat treatment and vacuum melting have significantly enhanced its properties.
Nickel-iron alloys with a 78% Ni content exhibit a permeability 10-20 times higher than silicon steel in weak magnetic fields. These alloys are indispensable in sensitive relays, magnetic shielding, telephone and radio transformers, precision AC and DC instruments, and current transformers. By alloying with elements such as molybdenum, manganese, cobalt, copper, and chromium, we can produce ternary or quaternary nickel-iron alloys with superior initial permeability (Ui) and maximum magnetic permeability (Um).
