Description:
Hafnium, symbol Hf, atomic number 72, atomic weight 178.49, is an illustrious, shiny silver-gray transition metal. With a remarkable melting point of 2227 ºC and a boiling point soaring to 4602 ºC, it boasts a density of 13.31 g/cm³. This largely plastic metal turns hard and brittle when contaminated with impurities. Stable in air, hafnium only darkens on the surface when subjected to combustion. Intriguingly, its filament can be ignited with a mere match flame. Sharing properties akin to zirconium, hafnium does not react with water, dilute acid, or strong alkali but dissolves readily in aqua regia.
