Description: Gadolinium, with the symbol Gd, has an atomic number of 64 and an atomic weight of 157.25. This silvery white, malleable metal boasts a melting point of 1313°C and a boiling point of 3273°C, with a density of 7.901 g/cm³. Notably magnetic at room temperature, gadolinium remains stable in dry air but tarnishes in humid conditions. It possesses the highest thermal neutron capture cross-section. Present in the Earth's crust at a concentration of 0.000636%, gadolinium is commonly found in minerals like monazite and bastnasite. Through magnetized refrigeration, gadolinium salts can achieve ultra-low temperatures nearing absolute zero.
Applications:Gadolinium finds extensive applications across various fields, including medical, industrial, and nuclear energy sectors. It's frequently utilized as a neutron-absorbing material in atomic reactors. Additionally, its uses extend to microwave technology and as a phosphor in color televisions. Gadolinium oxide, when combined with lanthanum, enhances the vitrified area and thermal stability of glass. It's also instrumental in the production of capacitors and X-ray intensifying screens.
