Tantalum, represented by the chemical symbol Ta, is an extraordinary steel-gray metal that belongs to the VB family on the periodic table. With an atomic number of 73 and an atomic weight of 180.9479, tantalum forms a body-centered cubic crystal structure and typically exhibits a +5 valence. Despite its impressively high melting point of 2995°C—making it the fifth highest among all elements—tantalum has a relatively low hardness, with a Vickers hardness of just 140 hv when annealed. This metal is highly malleable, allowing it to be drawn into thin wires. Additionally, it has an exceptionally low coefficient of thermal expansion, expanding only 6.6 parts per million per degree Celsius. Moreover, its toughness surpasses that of copper, rendering it a highly versatile material for various industrial applications.

Tantalum is primarily found in tantalite, often alongside niobium. It boasts moderate hardness and excellent ductility, enabling it to be crafted into thin foils or fine wires. Its low coefficient of thermal expansion and high chemical stability make it ideal for numerous applications. The metal's outstanding resistance to corrosion is due to a stable film of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) forming on its surface.
