Description:

Molybdenum, a remarkable metallic element symbolized as Mo, boasts an atomic number of 42 and belongs to the VIB group metals. With a density of 10.2 g/cm3, molybdenum is a silver-white, hard, and tough metal with an exceptional high melting point. Its superior heat conductivity ensures stability, and uniquely, it does not oxidize at room temperature when exposed to air. As a transition element, molybdenum demonstrates versatile oxidation states, altering the color of its ions accordingly.

The molybdenum (Mo) sputtering target inherits the impressive properties of its raw material. In its pure state, molybdenum appears as a silvery-grey metal with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 and a standard atomic weight of 95.95 g/mol. It boasts a high melting point of 2,623 °C (4,753 °F)—surpassed only by tantalum, osmium, rhenium, tungsten, and carbon among naturally occurring elements. Moreover, molybdenum features one of the lowest coefficients of thermal expansion among metals used commercially.

Application:

Molybdenum boasts exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity, a minimal thermal expansion coefficient, and robust corrosion resistance. These attributes make it indispensable in electric vacuum devices, high-temperature furnace heating elements, heat insulation boards, and evaporation boats. Specifically, molybdenum sputtering targets are extensively utilized in TFT-LCD manufacturing, thin-film solar cells, and semiconductor industries.

Welding method of molybdenum sputtering target
For the welding of molybdenum sputtering targets, the process involves providing molybdenum or molybdenum alloy target material, a back plate, and solder. The bonding surface of the molybdenum or molybdenum alloy target material is nickel-plated, then preheated to allow even distribution of solder. Similarly, the back plate is preheated for solder distribution. The bonding surfaces of both the molybdenum or molybdenum alloy target and the back plate are then adhered and merged through welding, forming a cohesive target component, which is subsequently cooled. This method ensures a high-strength bond between the molybdenum or molybdenum alloy target and the backing plate, notably a copper backing plate, meeting the stringent demands of the sputtering process. It effectively mitigates deformation or warping, even in larger target areas.
