While it begins to oxidize in air at approximately 933 K (660 °C, 1220 °F), it forms a protective oxide passivation layer even at room temperature.

Vanadium oxide's unique optical and electric properties lend it to use in Infrared intelligent windows, electro-optic switch devices, laser protection materials, and stealth technology.
